BLOG: 2014 Active BLOG
We've all seen some of those other sites; their 'blog' started about six weeks ago and has maybe 12 posts. Well, they've to start somewhere...
Here at the CoinMine, we've been analyzing things in quite a bit of detail for the past nine years; and we've been spot-on more than a random roll of the dice would indicate, since 2000!. Browse below through a few hundred pages of observations, picks, calls, diatribes, rants, and raves and mine your own nuggets.

12.28.13 HOW To MAKE 20% in the NEXT 48 HOURS - Facilitate Bitcoin Trade In 2013 Bitcoin has gone from about 13 USD to 700 USD. 1. Right now many folks are low on cash but have bitcoin. 2. They want to reap the increase in value, but don’t necessarily want to sell bitcoin into the market/cash out because they will be hit with a short term capital gains tax. 3. The capital gains rate is going UP in 2014 to your income rate. That will likely be a double digit percentage increase in tax (not counting state increases) depending on your current bracket. 4. So, in order to minimize your capital gains tax, while maximizing your value, you could trade your bitcoin now (before the end of the calendar year in 72 hours) for other goods. 5. For example, we are selling an item and have agreed to take bitcoin, on our end at a value 20% above our ask price, so the seller can save about 13% in taxes on their end. They pay us a bit more in bitcoin for our costs/time/hassle/fees/taxes to exchange the bitcoin ourselves. This benefits the buyer paying bitcoin allowing them to realize 2013 gains yet also saving them on 2013 taxes. This benefits us by increasing our realized price for the product. Of course, you must already have a product to sell into the market. If you haven’t made it that far in your endeavourers yet, time to get a move on… 12.18.13 2014 Capital Gains Rate · 0% if you're in the 10% or 15% marginal income tax brackets · 15% if you're in the 25%, 28%, 33%, or 35% marginal income tax brackets · 20% if you're in the 39.6% top bracket http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2013/12/13/2014-capital-gains-tax-rates-heres-what-you-can-ex.aspx 12.28.13 When An Ounce is NOT an Ounce Arbitrage for Fun ‘n Giggles There’s a guy out there willing to pay a premium for US Assay rounds. There are folks willing to pay a premium for the ‘right plastic’ There are folks willing to pay a premium for ‘First Strike’. There are folks willing to pay a premium for ‘MS/PF 70’. There are folks willing to pay a premium for ASEs vs 90% junk/melt There are folks willing to pay a premium for Morgans over Peace Dollars There are folks willing to pay a premium for toned Morgans There are folks willing to pay a premium for VAM Morgans There are folks willing to pay a premium for bags of Roosevelts over Mercury Dimes and on and on and on and on and on… Sure, when it comes to the point where those with the food and ammo will ONLY accept silver, then maybe an ounce is an ounce. Maybe not. Or, maybe that point doesn’t come for another 20-30 years, or even in your lifetime. To THAT point, why not arbitrage peoples’ ‘wants’. That is a major reason to hold silver diversified in a variety of forms. One of the major supposed drawbacks of holding Ag or Au is ‘it just sites there, doesn’t pay interest, blah blah’. Right, so in the meantime, arbitrage it 15 different ways, each for a few percent. More than one way to shave a dollar… 12.27.13 Sold GLD position established on 12.19. The first category, and what most people typically think of when using the term 'rare earth'. are a group of 17 very scarce elements. Rare Earth Metals (REE) elements are typically metals that are required for high tech development and manufacture of electronics, aerospace, military and similar products. Some examples include: Molybdenum Ruthenium Lanthanum Neobium Tantalum Cesium Lithium Cerium Vanadium Different analysts include varying example in their REE basket. For instance some would include Uranium while others would not. Since REE are required for military applications, the mineral stocks are strategic store – a very competitive market exists for the rarest REE. In the past few years Nevada Mining groups have begun investigating the ability for REE mining to replace or supplant precious metals mining in the state as the precious metal sector continues struggling to find new economical viable precious metal deposits. Extraction of these rare earths are similar to precious metal mining with a few notable differences. 1. Whereas precious metal ores have been sought out for a few thousand years, the REE have only come into demand in the last 70 years (some of these elements were only ‘discovered 100 years ago). This means that the mining infrastructure (power, roads, water, and human resources) do not exist where the ore bodies exist. 2. The mineralogy may require different engineering and technology than have usually been utilized on precious metals mines. Some of these extraction scenarios produce many more tons of overburden (waste rock) than precious metal mining. This is a social and environmental aspect that demands significant personnel resources and goodwill capital. There were previously a few popular blogs to read about REE... http://www.raremetalblog.com/ However, InvesorIntel.com has since bought these out. [NOTE: Sites mentioned by Investorintel may receive financial subsidies by manufacturers/miners for product placement and write-ups.] Lack of Availability of REE Deposits
Almost one
quarter of all Idaho mining is just one rare earth metal: Moly B. Denum is her
name. And this deposit has challengers. Even thought the BLM extended the Thompson Creek permit process for two years, there will be opponents. Will the mine continue?
http://www.bipac.net/page.asp?content=startpage&g=idahomining
What about Tantalum?
In 2009 the US Tantalum supply was 3 years with a very low replacement rate.
http://www.resourceinvestor.com/News/2009/10/Pages/Tantalum-industry-in-dire-need-of-new-resources.aspx
The largest commercially developed rare earth deposit in the US is at Mountain Pass, Ca, just a few miles from the Nv border. The Mountain Pass deposit has been just about the only major REE mining operation for several decades now. Although there are still significant reserves remaining, operation of the mine has been an off and on affair. In fact, the mine operations just restarted only four months ago.
The REE demand is growing. Even the scabs in congress don’t want to continue to rely on China to provide 95% of critical REE for critical US industries such as defense and silicon valley.
So, there is a latent demand for new sources. And those sources are few.
In fact, the California REE resource base in the areas surrounding Mountain Pass is either locked up as ‘parklands’, not sufficiently studied, or both.
Southern Nevada REE resources are also not well researched or estimated.
The Thor Prospect, just a few miles from Mountain Pass in Southern Clark Co. Nevada, had been one of the more promising lodes. However, the data collected and studies to date have not been encouraging:
http://geology.csupomona.edu/theses/JJBruns.pdf
In fact, discovery of new lodes, much less economically viable deposits, are as rare as a virgin at the Shady Lady.
It isn’t that the industry hasn’t been looking for new deposits: In the past few years Nevada Mining groups have begun investigating the ability for REE mining to replace or supplant precious metals mining in the state as the precious metal sector continues struggling to find new economical viable precious metal deposits. However, though extraction of these rare earths are similar to precious metal mining – there are a few notable differences. So, bottom line, until new deposits are discovered – the demand must be satisfied with known resources in China and Nevada.
Interestingly enough, many of the Nevada REEs may actually already be available, staged in piles, near existing infrastructure, on known patent lands.
That is, the diggings, overburden and process ore left behind over 150 years of Nevada precious metals mining may be full of economic REE levels!
Nevada Takes Inventory of Rare Earth Deposits that are Already Mined All those tailing heaps scattered throughout the state contain rare earths, elements necessary for modern day electronics. The original gold miners never sampled for these elements, but today they are indicating potential economic deposits. http://www.rgj.com/viewart/20130804/BIZ/308040013/Gold-Rush-era-discards-could-fuel-TVs-cellphones Unfortunately the link is now dead. The jist of the article is that prospecting geologists have just begun to inventory REE levels in the tens of thousand of tailing spoils/piles throughout the state.
THESE piles are already on the ground, already sorted, already crushed and just awaiting processing.
So, the field is ripe to investigate and process these resources!
Right????
What is the Status in the States?
IDAHO Have already noted the upcoming battle in Idaho for molybdenum.
CALIFORNIA California has ONE active deposit. Can more open up? Sure, like an ice cream stand in Hades.
Feinstein made a career bilking the public so her husband could get rich of no-bid contracts: The most recent one regarding no-bid contract to profit off fire sale sales of US Postal Service buildings is making the rounds. Her husband is a prime beneficiary.
“Senator Feinstein and her husband stand to make a fortune (EST at between $950 million and $1.1 billion!!) from these transactions. His company is the sole real estate on the sale. CRI will be making a minimum of 3% and as much as 6% commission on each and every sale. All of the properties that are being sold are all fully paid for. They were purchased with U.S. taxpayers dollars.” http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/b/Blum-Post-Office-Sale-061013.htm#.Ulls5Nvn-vE
In fact, Feinstein has been running this criminal enterprise for three decades now.
The Desert Protection Act alone locked up 1 Million Acres to prevent mining. Of course, this was prime REE and gold property. Much of the garbage non-BLM land turned into park was ‘compensated’ by swapping land with proven gold holdings to companies associated with Feinstein’s husband and other crooks. The land with potential REE around Mountain Pass is now off limits, a park that hardly anyone visits.
CHINA
Per Doug Hornig
of Casey’s International Speculator The corruption index and how it impacts mining. Sad to see the US darken, whilst notoriously corrupt china is lightening. Though I don’t swallow that load either, China has been corrupt for centuries and is getting worse. Here is just the latest scandal in the sector to bubble up through the crowded field: http://investorintel.com/rare-earth-intel/ganzhou-rare-earth-group-implicated-insider-trading-scandal/ That article states it is now a quicker permitting process to mine rare earths in china than the US. Now, THAT may indeed be the sad truth. And this is before the massive volume of new EPA regs scheduled to hit in 2014. The reality is the mine permitting has not been the major stumbling block. Mine permitting in Nevada has been reasonable and on par with permit lag times in other production companies. Look at the bottom of this page for comparison: http://geology.com/usgs/developing-a-rare-earth-elements-mine/#table12 What is interesting in that last table is how many US mines are stopped, not due to the permitting, but through lawsuits and government agency regulatory action. Now THAT is the increasing problem. The regime tentacles (EPA, DOI) are actively and vociferously shutting down mining production, for reasons suspect. Trouble in Lithium Land BLM Jacks up price to force miners to give up. BLM working hand in hand with EPA to shut down mining in the USA - example # 1,334,912. http://www.northernminer.com/news/rodinia-lithium-relinquishes-costly-nevada-claims/1002579308/?ref=rss&ctid=1002579308 I’ve been reporting on the lithium miners for a while, initially on the Silverpeak and most recently on Western Lithium… --- 8.10.12 Western lithium USA Corp (WLCDF) What makes this play interesting is that they are targeting lithium in the clay – NOT BRINE as typical (such as what Chemetall Foote mines about 8 valleys south [Silverpeak] of Kings Valley) The Department of Energy will list lithium as a strategic metal in 2015 and will announce at some point that there will be an excpected shortfall by 2025. And about that clay? montmorillonite (and bentonite) Recover of lithium from montmorillonite: http://openlibrary.org/books/OL2663029M/Recovery_of_lithium_from_a_montmorillonite-type_clay Now, it has been 8 or 9 years since I told you about the montmorillonite (and bentonite) Remember that time (5.22.2003) I told you christy whitman resigned as head of US Fed EPA the same day the story broke that EPA listed clay {vermiculite} as a carcinogen in the asbestos vein. oh laydy, Yep, the clay used as WELL DRILLING MATERIAL now a carcinogen. Think on that one long and hard for a few to see where it is eventually headed…. Well, of course the eastern financiers combined with dirty harry as taking orders from his Chinese handlers did EVERY THING they could to shut down the last mine that tried to develop vermiculite. Surprised they still allow this one to live: http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2002/May-17-Fri-2002/business/18770817.html Yep, oil-dril wanted to develop the clay to put into kitty litter. The PTB shut it down b.c. it would be ‘bad for the environment’. Now the CHINESE are mining the vermiculite and bentonite. Yep – they manufacturer kittly litter with it. And know what else they put the vermiculite and bentonite into? Pet food. Of course, didn’t stop there… Look into what MCD puts into their ‘milkshakes’ --- and only god knows what else…. [NOTE: I just bought WLCDF this week on that down opening.] Nevada Rare Earth News Updates Almost three years ago Nevada precious metal mining companies began scaling back land acquisition and sampling programs. This lack of major miner R&D provides an opportunity for the smaller players. The small players can move faster, see more opportunities, take more risk and will eventually revitalize the previously moribund sector. US Rare Earth Inc negotiates new mine contract. Increase in sales, increase in sector opportunities. Their Excellite micro-nutrient soil amendment (Montmorillonite clay based) has a growing market in India. US grow operations are also starting to expand their use of micr0 nutrient in hydroponic farms. Additional increase for clay is coming from new industries! One of the experts on Nv Rare Earth Deposits to give a talk next month in Arizona http://www.arizonageologicalsoc.org/events?eventId=752778&EventViewMode=EventDetails Rare Earth Portfolio How to Invest In REE Option One – Speculative: Stock Picking. This option requires the most amount of due diligence and time and will typically only pay off for the savvy. You will need to focus on a sector within the industry. For example, if you look at the Uranium slice of the REE pie, you might find choose to stick with the larger producers such as Denison, Cameco (CCJ), etc. Or, perhaps you want to allocate some very speculative wagers into micro firms that may be on to the next bid ore body and determine that Ucore or Fronteer, Uranerz (NYSE:URX) or Paladin have promise: When you become familiar with current producers, and learn their ore bodies, at that point you can begin to extrapolate from that ore body and predict which explorers in nearby areas have higher likelihood of production. For example, Uranium City in Saskatchewan might provide a more likely source of future uranium deposit discovery than Chicago, right? Option Two: The Funds Pinetree Capital, PNPFF, has multiple uranium stocks and is one of the very few funds with exposure to the rare earths; the fund also holds potash and precious metal portfolio. http://pinetreecapital.com/investments/sectors/uranium/ Option Three: ETF The Rare Earth Metal Fund (REMX) just started trading in 2010. Rare Earth Index at 52-week Low http://investorintel.com/rare-earth-intel/week-review-rare-earth-sector-hits-52-week-low-investors-pencil-graphite-winners/ That sector downturn was baked in the cake when the politicians finally took notice.
Murkowski gets on rare earth bandwagon in 2009:

tipped their hand at Operation Mountain Guardian when they snatched the kids

taken while at school in order to lure their parents in to the public detention
facilities. This also tells you that the coming false flag attacks will take
place between noon to 2 pm (Eastern), 9 am to 11 am (Pacific) in order to have
all of America’s public school students in school in order for DHS/FEMA to
control them. The sign at Arrowhead Stadium demonstrates clear intent that the
NFL is working DHS in order to become martial law ready. This also signals that
the NFL stadiums are going to be staging areas for martial law. Perceived
trouble makers will be lured to their final destination of justice as they try

Though they've come a long way form little LAC Minerals mining the Bullfrog, their management also circles the drain, picking yup speed. ABX now down to just two Nv properties. This is the point in the cycle for ascending companies to pick up properties and infrastructure from descending companies. Though Klondex may have overpaid for a property with a finite life, they needed to fend off a competing offer on the property from Waterton. So, would have they liked to pay lower? Probably. But like all the speculators waiting for the 'bottom' in gold, there will be no ringing of the bell. Time will tell, perhaps an increase in POG will make this look like a wonderful timing and price play. My third thought is they had to make this deal. The underlying problem of increase in costs can only be mitigated so far vai efficiency. at some point, now is as good a time as any, they need to increase efficiency through economy of scale. The other underlying problem is the regulatory environment in the states, even including mining-reasonable Nevada, are extending their leviathan arms. The insatiable lower class in Nevada clamors for 'services' and mining, along with warehousing, has been one of the only industrial sectors in the state to expand their base in the past decade. Along with this growth in population base, fuel by refugees from failed states and countries, comes an increasing demand for mommy's milk. (Shrill calls to increase taxes on mining profits). Even more worrisome, the regime is pushing the EPA to enforce regulations where there is no Best Available Technology currently available to meet the regulation. Recent developments in the Clean Air Act such as muddying the Interstate Rule with non-sequiters posing as decision rules, compounded with ridiculous control requirements for NPDES compliance and the overarching war against the element mercury provide an incredibly difficult regulatory operating environmental. By design, these behemoth maze of regulations are designed to favor the large multi-national firms that can afford a staff of regulatory scientists and local pols/lobbyists at the expense of smaller lean and mean operating firms. So, grow your ability to weather the strong or perish in hail fire... There are still deals to be done in Nevada. ABX and NEM, in their current descent, will need to further unload assets. Though the really interesting space is the rare earth sector. 12.3.13 Why

Kennedy found himself in the unwinnable position of alienating the israelis CIA, money brokers, bankers and war profiteers at the same time. Kennedy signed Executive Order 11110 in June. This order transferred authority to print currency FROM the banking cartel TO the Treasury Department. The US Mint had already struck 1964 Peace Dollars (though never released), the first time since 1921 that silver dollars were struck by the US mint. Less than six months after this act he was dead; US coinage was devalued 60% and they put his face on the devalued coinage as an act of mockery. Kennedy was dead just four days before Johnson signed NSAM 273. That signature reversed Kennedy’s decisions to de-escalate Vietnam. And of course the Federal Reserve never lost their monopoly on fractional banking. Motive and Means? Check. Follow the Money. Voila! with one majic bullet the banking cartel was back in business controlling a nations currency, the israelis kept their weapons, the weapon-makers had back their indo-china business and the CIA could again run unfettered drugs/slave/weapon carry trade in asia. win/win/win I read once, and now firmly believe, that the willingness of America to accept the absolute garbage whitewash over execution of their president was the defining moment in the downfall of the american republic experiment. The dark side knew if the country was willing to accept the coup and assassination of their elected leader, they would swallow anything – their complicit apathy declared so. 10.14.13 First Time in US History Seven Generals Fired at Once?
Now, I don’t necessarily trust just a couple blog sites. However, the WashPost and elsewhere reported on two of the
general firings: The two, Maj. Gen. Charles M. Gurganus, the top Marine
commander in southern Afghanistan at the time, and Maj. Gen. Gregg A. Sturdevant,
the senior Marine aviation officer in the area and the AP and elsewhere reported on two other General
Firings.
http://news.yahoo.com/general-charge-nuclear-missiles-fired-192305393--politics.html Had the bought-and-sold-for press-disinformation unit done
their job they would have noted that firing four generals within this short span
is extremely rare. The possibility there were three more is downright alarming. The reasons for the firing were absolutely bogus. More likely the Pentagon knows these Generals would not fire upon their own people which was the real reason they were sandbagged.
Not a good sign.
10.12.13 Who Receives the Assets in Your 401k?
The answer may surprise you. Fact is, the fine print and possibly the judge decide. Just because you assign beneficiaries doesn't mean the fine print gives a damn.
Take the case of Beth and Leonard Kidder:
Leonard's first wife passed, so he changed the beneficiary from her to his three children. Then he remarries and dies six weeks later.
Do the kids get the money?
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904007304576496612749922654.html
Nope. The court ruled that the fine print of the 401k plan stated spouses have immediate vesting
In Cajun Industries LLC v. Robert Kidder, et al), the court ruled that despite having previously named his three children as beneficiaries of his 401(k) plan, a deceased plan participant's 401(k) balance will pass to his new wife.
In California, the wife automatically has rights by law to the 401k, irrespective of who is assigned beneficiary. Now, the wife may sign a post-nuptial agreement waiving the 401k, but she can always change her mind - it just must be in writing. Get this, the writing can be part of her will, changing the inheritance from her grave!
10.13.13 The Great 401k Scam
The working class swallowed the lie hook, line and sinker when they accepted the 401K as a 'fair trade' for the previous pension. Previously, the worker and business owner had a compact. If the worker took care of the business of 30-35 years, the business would take care of the worker for the rest of his/her life.
It worked very well for decades, and helped build a great industrial economic base.
Then the bankers peddled their wares, and the working class was bankrupted.
There are up to 18 different fees and commissions loaded into the typical 401k plan. The employer may pay some, but the worker pays the many. These fees and commissions add up to OVER 3% in some plans! If you are paying 3% in fees, and 2% in inflation, you need to net 5% EVERY year just to BREAK EVEN!
So, it isn't happening. The baby boomers duped themselves.
Now they turn to the kangaroo courts to recoup their lifetime savings; good luck with that!
Yet, the drop becomes a trickle, and the trickle becomes a stream....

Too bad it coincided with the obamacare 'rollout'. Bad timing, eh? 10.10.13 Retail Sales I don’t often go ‘shopping’, but when I do I make the rounds. Have been in a ‘stocking up phase’ and in the past couple weekends I went to: - Home Depot (twice) - Walmart (twice, spent two and a half hours there) - Walmart Neighborhood - Lowes (three trips) - Target - OSH Hardware - Ace Hardware - Harbor Freight - Goodwill - Walgreens (two different stores) - Rite Aid - Marshalls - Ross - Two local grocery stores - Two different 99 cent stores - Big Five - REI - Bed and Bath - Costco - Williams Sonoma (twice) - About 10-12 higher end boutique retailers - About 5-6 second hand stores There are definitely some troubling signs out there. Rite Aid (RAD) A couple years ago Rite Aid did a reorganization. Essentially, they streamlined their operations, reduced their product lines and increased prices. The reorganization worked in as far as the stock price has been rewarded. I haven’t been back except for one teaser trip where I had a very nice coupon. Found their offerings meager and not worth the visit. Going back this week didn’t change my mind Unfortunately for me, it was a big loser. Here in NorCal Rite Aid took over Long’s drugs. The local Long’s I went to was in a 30,000 sq. ft store, more like a warehouse, and had been there since the 1970s. Some of the stock had been there almost as long! They had EVERYTHING. Best retail store in the city. All gone, now a Harbor Freight (Chinese crap importer); the new Rite Aid across the street simply exists to prey on the elderly picking up their prescriptions. Of course, this is a great business model and their stock price reflects that reality. Nobody is going to go broke running health care scams. REI - A Co-op. Unfornately they have been co-opted. Their last CEO is an outright criminal. She is the one now (as head of the Interior Department) directing the national park service to shutdown every amenity ossible and genrelly destroy the local park econoimies wherecer possible. Their new CEO is not much better. Although their prices have crept up, the quality and quantity are still competitive where you know where to look - primarily on recreation gear and supply rather than hardware and components OSH.Hardware - I went to a going out of businsess sale. Good for me, I got some screaming deals (70-80% off. I sense this particular store went out due to location (a part of the east bay that likely won't be coming back for decades) rather than some corporate dysfunciton, though I don't actually know as I have not looked at the company internals at all. Walgreens They certianly have the locations, I would say 3-1 more numerous than Rite Aid in Norcal. They are luring in low-informaiton shoppers with the free flu shot. Prices are not near a cheap as Walmart, but for what they do, their selection is much stronger than both RAD and WMT. Target (TGT) Target has been in a tailspin. Their average customer is beyond broke, and now out of credit. Their store here looked threadbare of both brands and items, this has been an ongoing rend. Mostly air, one or two items on the shelf with one square foot of emptiness behind each six ounce box. Their stock is underperformed only by their quality. The Merona brand is crap, almost everything made by Chinese slave children. Their recent earnings report was terrible. Margins and profit are slipping. Target has significant structural and demographic problems IMO. They cannot increase retail profits so they are pushing credit cards/financing even harder – another poor sign. Target’s earnings reflect their stores – in a nosedive. They are in between a rock (Walmart) and a hardplace (american consumer). My bet is they will be forced to ‘reorganize’ within three years. Walmart (WMT) They actually have turned things around. Has been two years since I’ve been in a Walmart. Last time I was there, I made a special trip to find two particular items (which I knew they had stocked in years past). Could not find either item, and decided to not go back to that store. Now, two years later I find they have retreated from their previous strategy and have again increased their stock (availability/wide selection and immediacy are the only reasons I shop there). However, they are still out of large selections of ammunition they previously held in stock… Costco is a well-run organization, still. Home Depot (HD) has righted many of their problems. The market rewarded them handsomely last couple years, many of their employees give their employer high marks, larger selection than Lowe’s (LOW) and they are actively defending their brand against the political lobbies. Williams Sonoma (WSM) The two times I was in the store there were a total of three shoppers, two of them being I. Not sure how the store will exist on just the mixer and knife set purchases of the 1%. New home establishments – fewer every year. The avg Millenium Man can’t get a job. His girlfriend is now just as likely to dump him for a secure Gen X’er in hopes mr. stable can provide babies since it doesn’t look like mr. Millenium Man has a hope or a prayer. Big Five (BGFV) They have announced plans to ‘re-structure’ a la Rite Aid. Haven’t seen any movement in that direction at the stores. I happen to like their poor management – allows you to pick up some great deals. I say the re-org fails and they get bought out. Nevertheless, their performance shows decent strength and the chart shows an interesting trading vehicle. One to watch… Who will pick up the retail pieces from the brick and mortar destruction? Outerwall (OUTR) Hailed as the turnaround solution for Coinstar (CSTR) and Redbox, OUTR has seen both shrinking margins and revenues. Long term, who is the next customer that will want to go to a store to pick up a video when you can simply stream online? In other words, don’t see Redbox surviving. Regarding OUTR management, how do you screw up CoinStar – a box that simply collect 8% all day every day? Hint: You can’t grow when your customer base no longer even had wealth in their coin jars at home. Conclusion All that said, this year more than ever I have conducted my shopping online – much of it at Ebay and Amazon.

Park Service Director Jarvis Lies to Congress States it was his idea to shut down the ocean, open air malls, and wide spots in the road - none of which were ever closed before in previous shutdowns.
Jarvis tries to claim his great contribution to the NPS is that he alone came up with the grand idea to purposefully punish the American citizen and welcomed international tourists by acting as stingy and niggardly as possible - exacting the harshest measures on those that might enjoy our nations heritage. “Andrew William Mellon was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 24, 1855. By the time of his death in August of 1937, Mellon's diversified business empire included oil refining, aluminum reduction, coal, steel, streetcar franchises, and more. In addition to being a talented businessman and banker, Mellon was also the United States' longest serving Secretary of the Treasury, as well as collector of some of the world's finest paintings. Mellon is well known for his involvement in the establishment of what is now Carnegie Mellon University, and for donating his substantial art collection (plus $10 million) to create The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.“ – Heritage Galleries, 2013

9.7.13 The Natural Arc of Progress for Production Quality Control One made the argument that the Japanese manufacturing industry was synonymous with garbage quality, and then evolved into a known high quality producer. Total Quality Management and all that jazz. However, there are three counterpoints
In fact, the entire Japanese care quality has degraded in the last few years. One way to measure this is the number of recalls. Another metric is the reduction of miles one can obtain on an original engine before major repair is required. Just a few years ago the typical jap engine could last 150-200 k miles before needed a valve job. Now, the average is just 90 miles (according to my mechanic). Though, one must wonder if this is the true path of an evolving/decaying manufacturing base, or simply a trick of planned obsolescence. And the underlying thesis may be unsupported since it rests entirely on this premise: There will always be a market of foolish consumers willing to go into massive debt to buy products from the factories as they improve their Qa/Qc. That market (US debt) may not be around at some point in the not-too-distant future. Who do you expect will fill this role? 9.6.13 The Latest John Mauldin Economic Brief https://d21uq3hx4esec9.cloudfront.net/images/uploads/ttmygh/6878/TTMYGH_03_sept_2013.pdf

Now, globes just necessary for handling of photographs, negatives and plates.
Previously, archivists recommended use of gloves (latex, cotton) for handling of any material. However, over the years specialists have noted that wearing gloves reduces one's dexterity such that the wear on the paper actually increased due to less tactile sense - more broken corners. rips tears, etc.
The human skin has oils which damage photographic material, so recommendation for use of gloves is still in effect. http://www2.archivists.org/usingarchives/typicalusageguidelines

8.15.13 US Court Finds MMR Vaccine Caused Autism
"Pervasive Developmental Delay.
Based upon that finding of fact, it follows as a natural conclusion that Petitioner has carried his burden of proving to a preponderance that the MMR vaccine at issue actually caused the condition's) from which Bailey suffered and continues to suffer. Inasmuch as the other elements of §300aa–11 (b) and (c) have already been satisfied, the Court holds that Petitioner has met his burden on his case in chief."
These facts likewise satisfy the Althen test set forth above. Petitioner’s theory of PDD caused by vaccine-related ADEM causally connects the vaccination and the ultimate injury, and does so by explaining a logical sequence of cause and effect showing that the vaccination was the ultimate reason for the injury. Also, the timetable in this case for the onset of ADEM fits within the range found to be reasonable in the cases addressing the same question.
Damning findings!
Bet you never heard this on CNNABCMSNBCFOX, eh?

He is laughed at, booed and jeered - Regime makes up story about boogeyman coming to blow up more embassies (why not, we didn't defend the last one). Now there aren't US folks on the ground to watch, the drone carpet bombing begins...

7.25.13 Wall Street Journal Reports - IRS Harassment Originated with Political Appointees at IRS Office of Chief Counsel Unlike their bosses who pled the 5th to cover the illegal activities directed by Senior Political Appointees - Ms. Hofacre and Mr. Hull, both life-long IRS employees with good records, reported that direction to harass conservative groups originated from the Chief Office of Counsel. There are only two senior legal appointees in that office – both appointed by Obama, and both report to Lerner. House investigators soon talked to workers in the Cincinnati office, who said everything they did came from Washington. Elizabeth Hofacre, in charge of processing tea-party applications in Cincinnati, told investigators that her work was overseen and directed by a lawyer in the IRS Washington office named Carter Hull. Now comes Mr. Hull's testimony. And like Ms. Hofacre, he pointed his finger upward. Mr. Hull—a 48-year IRS veteran and an expert on tax exemption law—told investigators that tea-party applications under his review were sent upstairs within the Washington office, at the direction of Lois Lerner. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324448104578614220949743916.html

5.28.13 John C. Bogle Spills the Beans: The Mutual Fund Scam means 3$ go to the Bankers for every 1$ that goes to you. "The example I use in my book is an individual who is 20 years old today starting to accumulate for retirement. That person has about 45 years to go before retirement -- 20 to 65 -- and then, if you believe the actuarial tables, another 20 years to go before death mercifully brings his or her life to a close. So that's 65 years of investing. If you invest $1,000 at the beginning of that time and earn 8 percent, that $1,000 will grow in that 65-year period to around $140,000. Now, the financial system -- the mutual fund system in this case -- will take about two and a half percentage points out of that return, so you will have a gross return of 8 percent, a net return of 5.5 percent, and your $1,000 will grow to approximately $30,000. One hundred ten thousand dollars goes to the financial system and $30,000 to you, the investor. Think about that. That means the financial system put up zero percent of the capital and took zero percent of the risk and got almost 80 percent of the return, and you, the investor in this long time period, an investment lifetime, put up 100 percent of the capital, took 100 percent of the risk, and got only a little bit over 20 percent of the return." http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/retirement/interviews/bogle.html

5.10.13 Review of Brand New Music Festival – BottleRock. Went yesterday to the first day of this new music festival – BottleRock at Napa Fairgrounds. T’was quite surprised how well the event was organized for a first time event! Cons I have no major complaints except you couldn’t bring in your own water (though free water and veggie burgers on-site). But most people need a reason to bitch. The locals complained about traffic, the VIP complained they didn’t get enough for their $$ (probably right about that) and the deadheads complained about no Further (canceled announced two weeks in advance). But, deadheads complain about everything anyway (and Bobby’s voice is now pretty much shot). Pros Great job fitting three stages into the fairgrounds – all were close, just a couple minute walk away, without the sound bleeding over. Not too large a crowd for any one stage. The sound was surprisingly good for a festival venue. The *sound* is what I pay for, and am often disappointed, not this time. Perfect weather, well behaved and fun crowd, good time! The transportation went amazingly smooth. Napa traffic almost always sucks on a regular day – I had expected the worst. However, they implemented a shuttle bus system that worked perfectly. Our ten minute drive there ended at the shuttle parking lot – the old Basalt Quarry/Shipyard. I didn’t even realize this old historical shipyard existed until yesterday, and I’ve been working on rehabbing military bases around SF Bay for the past 10 years. There was NO shuttle bus wait going there and only 8 or 9 minutes for the ride back. No traffic to speak of, incredible. Food At least 25 or 30 different wineries selling their best, good supply of food vendors. The main eating area had nice wooden chairs and redwood slab tables! Thought there would be more artwork, though the event-specific art showed very nicely. Music I saw half the set of Moonalice (w/ Pete Sears). They sounded really good. Vocals a little weak but the bass and guitar work was simply outstanding. The song structure better than average, these guys are experienced pros. X Had never seen them before. Vocals were much better than I expected, especially for the genre. They sounded great for their age, though they had a false start on one song and the band wasn’t as tight as I thought they would be given they are a three piece (+vocalist) and have been playing together for 30+ years. ALO Surprise of the bunch. Had never heard of these guys before and was amazed with their musicianship. All take lead vocals, nice harmony and song structure, positive vibration type music. Love it when I see a new band I’ve never heard and end up loving their set. Delta Spirit – another nice surprise for a band I’ve never heard before. Really high energy with strong original compositions. Thought vocals were a little weak but they were TIGHT. Unfortunately I missed almost all of Richard Thompson and missed the entire Violent Femmes set (which I really wanted to catch this band, had never seen before (and I used to play Blister in the Sun). They haven’t played together in seven years until this last month, their set was real short- but comprised their entire first album, in order. Saw one song by Joan Jett and a couple songs by Café Tacuba. They have quite the following. A tight funk/pop/world band. Thought the song structure and vocals a little weak but intense band and crowd energy. Black Crowes. Wow, they rocked – even better than the last time. Vocals and jams were great, like the new materials also. The dilemma (a good First-World problem) was that Evett Brothers, Primus and Violent Femmes were all playing at the same time! Tough to complain when the festival has three great acts playing simultaneously. So, caught about a third of Evett Brothers and two thirds Primus. Love the Evett brothers sound, VERY talented musicians, though would seem better to catch them at a festival like Strawberry or Millpond rather than on a large stage. They had the opportunity to expand their songs past the three minute mark but stayed in their comfort zone for whatever reason. Though, point in fact, Primus stole the event. Forgot how good these guys shred. Had never seen their long show before and they KILLED IT. Wow, their instrument mastery nears obsessive compulsiveness insanity. Probably helped they were playing to their home crowd. As it turns out, (best bassist alive today) Les Claypool’s grandfather passed away 5am that day. Primus character/cartoon Tommy the Cat was based on his grandfather, ‘Papa’. So Les gave a great heartfelt eulogy and then played Papa’s favorite song – the Battle of New Orleans. Even though this was a smash hit in 1959 most the crowd probably didn’t know the song. But, I learned this song on a school bus trip as a kid and STILL remembered 2/3rd s of the lyrics. Les played so fast he sang each verse and chorus three times and still had a sing along the last verse. Had NEVER seen a band cover this tune before...neat! Summary Can’t believe I’ve been going to live shows for 30 years now. Hardly go anymore since today I don’t like crowds and hassle and especially since access to streaming music is such a great deal nowadaze. But, glad I took the plunge back in the live festival music pool. The complainers are just complainers (and probably don’t have much experience going to shows). Overall great event, seven bands we saw (and missed several more) provided a great deal for the money, easy commute, sweet music – and all only 10 miles away! Yep, going back today (lots of newer bands on the ticket I have wanted to see i.e. Shins, Alabama Shakes, Black Keys etc.)! ahh….nor cal!
5.3.13 Sold GLD @141.8 for small gain and sold SGG @62.7 for small loss. Didn’t like the energy behind either of these position trades, better to get out even and wait for a better setup. 5.1.13 Major Economic News: Sub-Prime Mortgages are back/Capital Write-offs of Housing Debt
Today saw one of the biggest pieces of economic news in many months: The powers- that-be will bring back Sub Prime Mortgage Loans and allow underwater homeowners to write off their capital losses.
Hooray for me (bad for the country)!
Here is the gameplan:
-The banks (and the little people) will be allowed to ‘write off’ their bad debt
-Broke folks will again be given sub-prime loans
-The housing market will finally ‘recover’ due to the influx of even worse loans
-The banking sector will prop up the equity markets to new highs
-The Whitehouse will ‘save’ the middle class with a ‘booming’ paper economy for 3-5 years
Then the bottom all falls out….
Here is the substantiation:
Off With His Head
Currently, Edward DeMarco is the (acting) head regulator of Federal Housing Finance Agency. The FHHA oversees Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac, the two largest backers of home mortgages in the US.
The administration will NOT make DeMarco permanent because he won’t let the banks allow underwater homeowners to write off their capital losses. That is, if you own a home currently worth 200k but the mortgage is 300k, you still need to make payment on 300k or short sale the house.
However, DeMarco would NOT allow the banks to write off their bad loans because he knew it would simply be a transfer of debt FROM Big Banking to the US Citizenry.
DeMarco rebuffs Democrats: http://thehill.com/homenews/house/213975-dems-raise-pressure-on-fannie-freddie-regulator-to-write-down-mortgage-principle-
The White House desperately needs some economic wins, given the very poor state of the overall economy (look at today’s abysmal job numbers). Hence, they wanted to sack DeMarco and instead install puppet Mark Zandi.
http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/obama-considering-economist-zandi-head-u-housing-regulator-144210060--sector.html
Back Scratching Gone Wrong
Of course, you may recognize the name Mark Zandi as the Chief of Moodys’s Analytics. That is the organization which gives out credit ratings and guaranteed the last decade of subprime loans as AAA while they knew the loans were actually garbage. Naturally, Zandi is an operative of the criminal front known as Warren Buffet. Buffet and his firm Berkshire has been the largest single investor of Moody’s for years; at one point he owned over 20% of the company (when Moody’s was perpetuating the subprime ratings fraud).
Neither Moody’s nor Buffet apologized for their role in the housing scam. Far from it, they have been rewarded handsomely:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/02/fcic-testimony-warren-buf_n_597355.html
Appointing Zandi was going to be the Whitehouse quid pro quo for Buffet’s ‘service’ to the Whitehouse.
However, something went wrong. Namely, even Zandi told the democratic wing that there was no way he would allow the banks to write off capital losses since that would prop up the housing market and stock market in the short run (3-5 years) but create extremely stressful fundamental shocks to the financial system.
Here’s why:
- The banks would ‘write off’ the capital losses - Banking stocks would now be ‘worth’ much more and the financial sector would raise the stock markets to new highs - The Federal Reserve would ‘absorb’ the capital losses - The Federal Reserve will then transfer bad debt to US Treasury (same at TARP) - US Treasury would continue to sell debt (US Bonds) to finance these capital losses - Long Term, the debt is unsustainable and brings down the system
The Powers-in-Charge aren’t concerned about long term, they care about the next two election cycles – and feathering their own nests – that is all.
So, Zandi is no longer in play.
Enter the New King
Hence the President TODAY named Mel Watt (D - NC, 12th District) as the new nominee for head regulator of Federal Housing Finance Agency.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/05/01/us-usa-housing-fhfa-idUSBRE9400EM20130501
Why?
Because Mel Watt will allow capital write-offs to ‘help the suffering middle class’ and also allow the banks to again write subprime mortgages to ‘help the suffering middle class’.
Naturally, you and I know that Mel is bought and paid for by BIG BANKS. Look at his list of donors if you want further substantiation. Though, all you really need to know is that Charlotte, NC is a Major banking center of the US. Guess which district Charlotte, NC is in? Yep, NC 13th District = Mel Watts.
The republicans in congress will put on a great kabuki theater opposing Mel Watts, but Mel will get the nod. (Or, in an alternate ending of the play, Watts gets shelved and parties settle in favor of the ‘reasonable’ Zandi who probably already gave his consent over the weekend).
The Sun Rises and the Sun Sets
- The banks (and the little people) will be allowed to ‘write off’ their bad debt - Broke folks will again be given sub-prime loans - The housing market will finally ‘recover’ due to the influx of even worse loans - The banking sector will prop up the equity markets to new highs - The Whitehouse will ‘save’ the middle class with a ‘booming’ paper economy for 3-5 years
Then the bottom all falls out….hard.

4.20.13 Santa Clara Coin Show - One of the Largest In California Good turnout of dealers, perhaps 75 or so on the bourse floor. The ones I spoke to either reported having an average or very good show. However I thought retail traffic was light. Friday was apparently even better.
Some rued the recent plummet in price of gold and silver. Even more distressing is the lack of sellers and lack of available supply.
1 Oz Maple ask on wholesale level is $1,450
1 Oz silver dollars between $31 (Peace) and $34 (Morgan
1 Oz modern silver bars available at $26/oz
Though as a point these were based on smaller volumes in stock, larger volumes - especially 90% melt have a higher premium and harder to acquire right now.
Someone brought in a gold bracelet for sale. Marked 15C (that's right, with a C, not a k).
Legit - England used a15c stamp, albeit rarely, at turn of the century up until about 1932 for better pieces that would experience high friction wear - such as bracelets. Thought it was very pretty, actually. The 15c has a much nicer yellow than the 14k common for jewelry. The 15c stamp very uncommon now in the wild in the western US - professional jeweler had only seen two or three other examples before. locally.
Picked up some nice deals for myself, had a good outing!

4.19.13 Boston - The First Patriot Day - April 19, 1775
British Troops enforcing control for the occupying regime attempted to disarm colonists and seize their weapons and leaders.
The colonists shot back - the only logical defense of forced gun control and illegal disarmament attempts.
Long live the Republic!
On this day in 1775 just a few dozen Bostoner's with Muskets took on the largest Imperial Force on the planet, and won.
Today 1 Million Bostoner's are cowering behind closed doors in fear waiting for the Imperial Force to solve a lone 19 year old teenager!
Pathetic.... Muskets on Boston Common? Year ago, someone made the point to me regarding the absurdity of gun laws. The point was made that in the 1970s (?) restrictions were passed on carrying a weapon in Boston. However, there was still on the books a 1700s law that required all men of a certain age to carry a musket on Boston Common to guard against bears. I looked for that 1700s law a few weeks ago, could not find it... 4.19.13 How Much Coca Cola is Water and how much isn't?
Find out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CjgmhaBEGk 4.19.13 How come nobody went to jail for the 2008 financial collapse? Abstract:
Sure, I understand that for some of you 2008 is ancient history... However, even if you didn’t lose your job and house and credit score (or all three) during the Great Recession, you are still reaping the ‘benefits’ of a lackluster economy and all it entails. We send people to jail for low lever robbery, fraud, drug dealing and prostitution., right? How come we won’t at least *attempt* to prosecute folks for the greatest financial crimes and fraud in the history of history? Let’s review some facts... Anthony Mozilla as head of Countrywide made over $250million for rampant fraud. The government agreed to ‘deferred prosecution’ for Mozilla as long as he paid a 5M$ fine. That right, a fine of 2% for bankrupting tens of thousands of hardworking US citizens. He only had to pay back a nominal fraction of what he STOLE from thousands and thousands of US families and DOES NO JAIL TIME. No conviction, not even a prosecution! Just this week Bank of America (they bought Countrywide) reported some more details of the settlement with Justice Department to avoid prosecution of any employees and lock in profits for the company. How about HSBC bank, one of the largest on the planet. They have been funding terrorism on multiple fronts for years – Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, et. HSBC *voluntarily* paid a fine of $1.9Billion USD. Yesterday HSBC announced earnings of over 1,200% that amount just last year (funding Syria, Libya, Chechnya, etc)! One might consider it a ‘light slap on the hand’ for the crime of funding and committing money laundering for the worst terrorist on the planet. Document well here (but, curiously, in NONE of the mainstream press?!?) http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/gangster-bankers-too-big-to-jail-20130214 Keeping things simple with just the two examples of Countrywide and HSBC but there are multiple frauds of Bear Stearns, JPMorgan, Chase, WellsFargo, Citibank, AIG – all the big banks perpetrated the scams willingly How come NOBODY was held accountable? NOBODY went to jail, in fact, NOBODY was even prosecuted! How is that? Reason One: Those responsible for conducting the mass financial crimes are the same bundlers that fund the election campaigns and slush funds of both parties. True story! Reason Two: Those responsible for prosecuting the crimes have a vested interest in conducting the crimes and preventing prosecution. True Story! Here are the names and facts: Question: What agency is responsible for prosecuting crime at this level? Answer – The US Justice Department. Who is in charge of the US Justice Department? Answer: Eric Holder Who at Department of Justice is responsible to prosecute financial crimes: Answer: Lanny Breuer, head of the Justice Department's criminal division. Breuer was responsible, as Department of Justice, to prosecute these firms. “While Holder and Breuer were partners at Covington, the firm's clients included the four largest U.S. banks - Bank of America, Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo & Co.” http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/20/us-usa-holder-mortgage-idUSTRE80J0PH20120120 As it turns out, naturally, both he and Eric Holder hold significant financial interests as former employees and CURRENT silent PARTNERS of large and connected Washington D.C. Law firm Covington & Burling. Covington & Burling represent the BIG BANKS! That’s right, Holder and Breuer (also the architect of Fast and Furious) hold personal, professional and financial interests in the firm REPRESENTING the criminal banking cartel. They profited by the fraud perpetrated by these banks, they continue to profit via ‘fees’ (fraud, graft, bribery and payola) paid from the banks (using the ‘bailout money’ = your tax dollars) via Covington & Burling. They obfuscate and protect their real interest – mega banking cartel – from prosecution by the Justice Department. So, then what happened. March 6, 2013: Holder, chief law administrator for the current regime told the US Senate Judiciary Committee that Justice Department would NOT prosecute ANY of the criminals responsible for crashing the economy and destroying tens of thousands of lives. That’s right, you did not read wrong! http://www.salon.com/2013/03/07/holder_banks_too_big_to_prosecute/ And what happened to poor, misunderstood, Lanny Breuer? Well, he landed on his feet. Beginning of April Lanny Breuer receives a $4 Million signing bonus by his ‘new’ firm! Guess who is the new firm? That’s right: Covington & Burling! http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/blog/payday-the-lanny-breuer-story Breuer, Holder’s number two man at Dept. of Justice, is now ‘officially getting paid’ to represent the Big Banks. Getting paid just as he always has, representing the banks just as he always has! The criminals are running the justice department. Documented and Cited. 1. Commerce has been moving online (AMZN, ebay) with product shipped USPS. Delivery now slowed down 14%. = drag on economy.
2. Many repairs made on Saturdays with parts shipped Friday. now will wait til Monday.
3. Workers have 5 day week in a six day period with overlap and ability to backfill; that bench will now go away and attrition will lessen labor pool
4. USPS runs largest vehicle fleet on planet. You will now increase that fleet traffic into a shorter time (no, the mileage won’t increase but the time on road will shift from non-peak to peak commute days)
5. Increase in slammage/late fees by credit cards, etc. ‘we didn’t get your payment in time’
6. Many items are semi-perishable or time urgent (medicine, event tickets, cookies) and two more days matter
7. USPS loses economy of scale losing 1/6 business to Fedex and UPS 8. MOST IMPORTANT: many peoplse don’t realize the vital social role USPS offices play in small communities. Many function as de facto town hall/social hub out in the sticks.
More importantly, there are hundreds of thousands of elderly shut-ins that literally may not see ANYONE all week except the mailman. That is the person that checks in on them and calls the family or ambulance when there is a problem… Would actually make MUCH more sense to keep Sat delivery and stop Friday delivery.
There are PLENTY of changes needed at USPS, Still, USPS is actually one of the very few efficient govt operations - the exact WRONG one to cut first per my experience.

2.23.13 The Sequester?
Q: What is the sequester? An automatic across-the-board cut in US government spending ranging from about 2-8% per program.
Q: Why is the sequester necessary? A: The current administration has not passed a budget, ever. The sequester implements budget cuts recommended by a bi-partisan panel intended to reduce the unsustainable government debt levels in-lieu of an actual budget.
A: Is the Sequester the same as a Shutdown? No. A shutdown has mandatory temporary furloughs (lay offs of 'non-essential' employees). Most government employees are non-essential.
Q: Have there been other government shudtowns? A: Yes, shutdowns are fairly common under Democratic Presidencies. Between 1977 and 1995 there were fifteen shutdowns.
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/federal-eye/2011/02/government_shutdown_facts_and.html
Q: Who proposed the sequester? Across the board shutdowns, as shown above, are typically used by Democratic Presidents. This remains the case. In the current situation, the Democratic White House and Democratic Senate proposed the sequester.
According to Bob Woodward, the White House devised the plan and brought the Senate on board:
"Obama personally approved of the plan for Lew and Nabors to propose the sequester to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). They did so at 2:30 p.m. July 27, 2011, ..."

Q: Were government employees paid during the last shutdowns? A: Yes, government employees were paid in full for any furlough they received in the last two major shutdowns. The federal employees received three weeks free vacation. As typical, they received payment for their votes and you paid for the extra graft, inefficiency, government contract ratifications, double payment, etc. Most furloughs with previous shutdowns were so small (some were just a few hours) that nothing happened - as typical.

May have been accurate 15-20 years ago, but not now - not even close.
In the US there are thousands of Microbreweries producing high quality handcrafted beer. The industry resurgence since the Yanks exported the piss to lower-end consumers overseas has led to a major new movement of quality beer crafting and food pairing in the US. In turn, this renaissance has positioned the US solidly as the fermentation science headquarters of the world, with the new Mondavi Center at UC Davis the epicenter. Oregon State also provides a high quality mature program; U Wisconsin now building a program to leverage off their top notch food science program. In the rest of the world, Nottingham (UK) and Otago (New Zealand) have just started building their fermentation programs based upon existing solid food science programs.

2.14.13 President Wants Someone Else to Fix Economy
When it comes to jobs and economy, every presidential call to action requires someone ELSE do the activity. In this case – congress must do the heavy lifting. And as the article points out, congress either won’t or already refused to fulfill Obama’s wish list.
Yet, when it comes to gun control, higher fees, more regulation and other economy-killing measures – the president is replete with numerous legislative end-runs around congress known as Executive Orders. Yet, regarding forthcoming EOs on anything that would actually help rather than strangle the economy….(crickets)….
The monopolies LOVE regulation! In fact, their lawyers WRITE the bills and their lobbyists on K Street PUSH the bills onto the congresscritters.
The big mega firms have dozens of drones to implement the garbage regulations and fill out all the databases. The small businesses have NONE of that dead weight on their staff, each member of a small business team implements a core function. Big business buys the garbage regulations to stifle their smaller competitors, in turn leading to the monopoly. Of course, the president can’t fix the economy and in fact we are better off if he doesn’t try.

2.10.13 US Export and Import of Gold
Understanding gold imports and exports proves critical to understanding international financial currents as a metric of capital flowing into and out various nations.
In the United States numerous entities track gold holdings as a nation’s financial reserves. However, there are two entities that primarily track gold traded in and out of the United States; these are the US Census Bureau and the United Nations. Accordingly, these two entities maintain the definitions and standards that govern how they track this gold trade.
Standard Definitions of Gold per International Trade – Development of Standards
“A definition is nothing more or less than a quote without context” - CoinMine
Gold & silver smiths were one of the original careers listed in, what in effect is the first Occupational Work Survey, the 1850 US Census. Classifications to track economic systems were further developed after the industrial and technological boom of the 1920s, which birthed the Standard Identification Code (SIC) established in the 1930s.
The SIC remained more or less unchanged until the North American Identification Code (NAIC) replaced the SIC in 1997 to harmonize data of the US, Mexico and Canada per the North American Free Trade Agreement. The US Office of Management and Budget, an office of the federal Executive Branch, maintains the NAICS codes today.
The US Census Bureau tracks gold trade based upon the NAICS codes.
Separately, the United Nations developed the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC). The United Nations developed the SITC through efforts to harmonize international customs standards. These international customs standards primarily included the 1955 Tariff Nomenclature (BTN) of the Customs Cooperation Council and the Minimum List of Commodities for International Trade Statistics developed by the forerunner of the United Nations, the League of Nations, in 1938. This commodities list was modeled on a customs classification and list developed the previous year by the League of Nations statistical committee.
So we see that classifications for gold trade had been independently tracked for gold as a financial instrument, gold as a commodity, and gold as a consumer good.
What is ‘Gold’?
As developed and maintained by the United Nations, via the Statistics Division Registry, Gold is:
'Non-Monetary Gold' is defined as a standard by the United Nations Statistics Division Classification Registry, Standard International Trade Classification, Revision 4 (SITC, Rev. 4).
971.01 Gold (including gold plated with platinum), non-monetary, unwrought or in semi-manufactured forms, or in powder form 971.02 Base metals or silver, clad with gold, not further worked than semi-manufactured 971.03 Waste and scrap of gold and ash containing precious metal or precious metal compounds (including metal clad with gold but excluding sweepings containing other precious metals)
SITC Division Code 97: Gold, non- monetary (excluding gold, ores and concentrates) SITC Division Code 97.
SITC Division 89, Subgroup 897: Jewellery, Goldsmiths’ and Silversmith’s Wares; and Other Articles of Precious or Semiprecious Materials, N.E.S.
Remember, the US considered gold smithing (and interestingly, ‘gold beating’ was a separate occupational class) an occupation and thus gold material used or wasted during smithing maintains an individual classification.
You can see the first two definitions used SITC Revision 4. Notably, Gold Coin and Monetary Gold were two of the few definitions not tinkered with between Revisions 3 and 4, likely for political reasons (Gold IS a political metal).
Here was the last revision of the UN SITC codex:
http://unstats.un.org/unsd/trade/SITC%20Rev%204%20FINAL.pdf
Of curious note, the UN buries the gold information at the very end of the document.
Coins and Numismatics Important to underscore that the UN makes a distinction between coin and legal tender. Herein the UN upholds the old tenet that a nation’s coinage serves as currency, whereas the paper and derivative obligations serve as debt.
SITC Division Code 96: Coin (other than gold coin), not being legal tender.
US export of numismatic coins has increased year-over-year (2011-2012) whereas the import of numismatic coins has decreased.
Like many other goods, the US imports more numismatic coins than it exports, considerably so (about double).
In June 2012 (the last available data set I could find) the US exported 120 Million$ worth of numismatics. This is up from the last set of figures I looked at (March) and is also up year over year. However, the US imported 160 Million$ of numismatics in June so the deficit narrowed from the March figures.
Previously, In March 2012 the US exported just 90 Million$ worth of numismatics but imported 196 Million$.
The data shows in black and white how thin the numismatic sector really is by simple comparison to other goods sectors.
Moreover, I suspect ‘numismatics’ as tracked by the Census includes Gold ‘bullion’ coins such as the Maple, Krugerrand, etc. The data hasn’t necessarily been easy to find but one can root around for the major import/export companies of gold and see that Canada and South Africa rank high on the list. Of course, both those countries are major gold producers and also produce a gold coin available for export, and popular as such.
At the beginning of the most recent financial crisis, in 2008, Numismatics showed the FASTEST growth amongst all US imports. That number and ratio slowed down considerably since 2008, but given a new financial crisis brewing, expect it could uptick once again.
The Gold Trade
Again, in the United States gold trade is tracked by the US Census Bureau, U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (‘Census’).
Here is the Census definition of ‘non-monetary’ gold:
“Gold exports, nonmonetary - This addition is made for gold that is purchased by foreign official agencies from private dealers in the United States and held at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The Census data only include gold that leaves the U.S. customs territory.”
(Had not realized that ‘US’ customs territory was different and distinct from ‘US’ administrative territory under Uniform Commercial Code)
The Census considers ‘monetary gold’ as only that gold held by banks or governments on the books as part of their monetary system and does not track such as an export.
The Census does track non-monetary gold for export/import purposes. Further,
- The Census Bureau treats jewelry as ‘non-monetary gold’ and as a consumer good. - The Census treats gold coins not in circulation as ‘numismatics’ and as a consumer good. - The Census treats gold bars/bullion as a commodity.
So, to track the actual Import/Export ratios for all gold one must separate the various streams of goods.

1.13.13 Air Quality in China pretty nasty http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/A/AS_CHINA_AIR_POLLUTION?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2013-01-13-05-02-55 At one point last month in Bejing their Parts Per Million 2.5 micron exceeded 10x the US EPA maximum allowable limit. Though China has been purchasing air quality monitoring equipment, they will put up with fairly nasty conditions. On the other hand – Korea, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam put a premium on quality of life and have been buying much more equipment, per capita. More shrewd business folks by and large also. As an aside, we are looking for distributors in Colombia and possibly Chile. Should have a good understanding of environmental controls, especially air quality, and already have environmental product distribution channels established and looking for additional specialized lines. Must understand host country mining, manufacturing and environmental regulations and business climate/protocol. Contact me for more info. Also, don’t see much industrial demand in Panama, but am surprised they have not diversified into manufacturing yet. Possibly soon? 1.12.13 Detachable Penis by King Missile

1.12.13 Coverdell Educational Savings Account made 'permanent' The Coverdell had been planned to sunset back to pre-Bush era terms: $500 max per year. Congress made the $2,000 limit 'permanent' starting this month, usable for most educational expenses. You can set up the Coverdell ESA, a type of Individual Retirement Account (IRA) in the name of a child or grandchild or niece, fund up to $2,000, where gains grow tax deferred.
The downside? These savings accounts will count against financial aid packages. Universities already conduct means testing. Poor families on the dole gain at the expense of working class families, as typical. 1.12.13 Very Damning and Insightful Write up on the False Flag Sandy-Hook: http://theintelhub.com/2013/01/12/sandy-hook-shooting-active-shooter-drill-confirmed-by-law-enforcement-raises-suspicion-of-false-flag-operation/ Good Article on Mass Shooters and the ‘Medication’ They Took http://www.wnd.com/2013/01/the-giant-gaping-hole-in-sandy-hook-reporting/ 1.11.13 Sun Drives Climate Change http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2013/08jan_sunclimate/ 1.11.13 The Real Story on “Terrorism” in the USA:

performance for the first 11 years you would have had to hold EACH of those
firms. Doubt that was tried often, much less successfully so. 1.1.13 The Feds Infiltrated and Shut Down the Occupy Movement
